I love vintage table top mannequins! They are so easy to display, without the need to find precious floor space. In the many years I have collected vintage mannequins, I have never seen a wasp waisted one like this before, which makes her a very rare lady indeed. She is in excellent condition, given that she must date to around the 1880s and she is a French Stockman make. Even the silk at the top of the torso is pretty much intact, with only some discolouration and some rubbing which can be seen in the pictures - silk from this period is normally in very poor condition, so this lady must have been very well looked after. The stand is not original to the torso, but I think they make a nice pair and the wooden base to the torso was missing, so the cross bar is a new addition to steady the torso on the stand.
Based on the use of silk, I would surmise that she was intended as a display piece for corsets, rather than a functional item. I can just imagine her in the window of a smart boutique, displaying the latest corsets for the fashionable young ladies of the time. She certainly is very unique with that amazing wasp waist and I am unlikely to find anything quite like her again.
Measurements: bust - 34 inches, waist - 21 inches, hips (starting from the lowest part of the torso at the side and then around)- 34 inches, height (from the top of the back to the floor) - 75 cm
